To begin with books about Brexit, I highly recommend The European Union: A Citizen’s Guide, by Chris Bickerton. This little slip of a book is full of provocative thinking, but begins with a grounding of what the EU is, how it works and what its structures and operations really look like. In an aim to narrativise the turbulent fallout of the 2016 referendum, a new genre of Brexit literature is emerging, reminiscent of classical 20th-century dystopian fiction. The Brexit commentary in Middle England can be too on-the-nose at 2019-07-25 Autumn is a 2016 novel by Scottish author Ali Smith, first published by Hamish Hamilton.It is the first of four seasonal ‘state of the nation’ works. Written rapidly after the United Kingdom's 2016 European Union membership referendum, it was widely regarded as the first 'post-Brexit novel' dealing with the issues raised by the voters' decision. The first of a quartet of season-themed novels, it begins with the Brexit vote and spools forwards in time (and backwards, and sideways, as is Smith’s wont) towards November 2016. Enter the novelist that predicted Brexit, and wrote the first dystopian novel published after it.
